There is an obvious difference between a want and need. A want means that you have a desire to possess something. On the other hand, a need is a requiremnt for survival. Some expamples of a want are: wealth, a mansion, a vacation home, and season tickets for the Knicks. Needs include food, shelter, and clothing. Education can possibly fit under both categories.

  8. A want is not something that is a necessity of life. A want is something that you can go throughout your life without, such as passes to Universal Orlando. I do not NEED them to survive, but I sure as hell would enjoy having them as an additive in my life. A need is something that you cannot go without in life. Some things like food, water, and shelter are things that you cannot go without in life. Food and water are needed to nourish us, day after day. Shelter is needed to protect us against the harsh conditions of weather and the environment surrounding us. Without proper shelter we would die. - Matt Treppiedi

Some examples of wants are a car, a trip to go snow tubing, money, and a new house. Some examples of needs are shelter, water, food and love. A need is something you must have for survival and in order to live. For example, water, food, and shelter are all needs. A want is something you don't need, but want it for pleasure and happiness. For example, a mansion, cars, cell phones, and an iPad are all wants, but you truly don't need those things.

Basically, when you say you need a certain item, you're also saying that you cannot for the life of you live without it or else you won't survive. But, a want is something that we would like to own and possess, but it's not the end of the world of we don't end up possessing these items. Examples of this are new cars, diamonds, clothes, etc.

The difference between a need and a want is that a need is a basic requirement for survival, the opposite of satisfying one's enjoyment. For instance, clothing, food, shelter, water, education which are the crucial aspects towards survival. A want is something we would like to obtain to satisfy our enjoyment. It is not for survival since its not mandatory for in order to live.
